TLS Media Lab
The Teaching & Learning Studio houses the TLS Media Lab, a facility for you to create your own video materials. Please review the information below for guidance on selecting the appropriate recording tool and preparing for your recording session.
Lab Hours & Reservations:
|7:30am - 11pm||7:30am-5pm||11am-4pm||Closed|
Note: There is no support for the Lab on Saturday and after 5:00pm weekdays.
- Initial Visit
- Your first visit to the TLS Media lab will require an orientation to the software and equipment. You can schedule your TLS Media Lab orientation through your Instructional Design Consultant or TLS Media Services.
- Return Visit
- After you have received your orientation you may reserve it for subsequent visits through the Academic Technology Suppport Desk at firstname.lastname@example.org
During these subsequent visits if assistance or training is needed it must be scheduled in advance through TLS Media Services. Training is provided for simple recording and basic editing. However, no direct staff support is available for editing services or other advanced work
- Allow time for captioning
- All RIT videos with audio are required to have captioning, The captioning process takes 3-7 days, therefore, plan on creating your videos at least 7 days prior to when you want your students to be able to access them.
- Plan on having your videos captioned & hosted by RIT
- Request a video upload link(drobox) in advance using the media request form.
- This will allow you upload your finished video(s) to the RIT streaming video server and submit it for captioning.
- This is also how you will get the streaming server embed codes for placing your videos in myCourses.
- Remeber to bring your upload link to the studio on your recording day, this ensures you will be able to submit your videos immediately.
- Saving your work
- Bring a USB Drive if you want to take your video files with you.
- Please be aware, the studio computer erases all temporary project files each time a user logs off or restarts the computer.
- Working with audio and video
- Bring headphones (optional)
- Wear solid colored clothing. Stripes or tight patterns are difficult for the camera to process.
- Prepare your presentation
- Bring an outline or script.
- Bring your PowerPoint or other presentation files.

- Once you arrive
- Power on the desktop computer (its under the desk)
- Turn on the florescent lights only if you are not using the camera.
- Turn on the studio lights only if you plan to use the video camera.
- Adjust the monitor to lay in a horizontal position if you are using the writing stylus. If you are not using the stylus you may need to adjust the monitor in an upright positioning.
- Position the microphone so that it is within three feet of where you will be speaking. If you are recording only a single voice, ensure the setting on the back is in postion 1.

Captioning and hosting
The instructor can "draw" directly on the computer monitor using a stylus. While it is possible to draw with a mouse, drawing with a pen-like artifact is easier for most people. The use of the interactive pen display can be combined with recording software such as snagit to create whiteboard lectures.
A USB mic that is easy to use and provides high quality audio recording.
Instructors can add a personal touch to their recordings by including a camera recording of themself as they explain concepts.
