When we hear the term “peer observation,” evaluation of teaching is often the first thing that comes to mind. However, a carefully designed process can also lead to more effective teaching practice, both for individual faculty members and for the departments or schools in which they teach. This session will offer an overview of peer observation, consider some of its purposes and potential outcomes, and begin considering best practices for creating and sustaining a robust, meaningful process. By the end of this session, participants will be able to describe the different types and purposes of peer observation as well as explain when and why it should be used.

Presenter: Billie Bennett Franchini, Ph.D., is the Assistant Director of the Institute for Teaching, Learning and Academic Leadership (ITLAL) at the University at Albany, where she works with faculty members and graduate students on issues of teaching and career development. Dr. Franchini's visit was facilitated by the History Department in the College of Liberal Arts.

Hosted by Faculty Career Development Services.

Light Refreshments will be provided.
