Instructional designer Michael Starenko will lead this active learning-style workshop to discuss the multiple purposes and elements of a course syllabus and explore how to (re)design a syllabus that facilitates both effective teaching and student learning. Significant time will be devoted to comparing and contrasting actual syllabi in small groups.

Some of the questions addressed in the workshop include:

  • What course-specific policies ought to be included in my syllabus and how should I frame them?
  • What message is my syllabus sending to students?
  • How can my syllabus by more "learner-centered"? That is, how can it better inform, guide, and motivate students, especially when they’re not in class?
  • What resources and services are available for planning, writing, and formatting my syllabus?
This workshop is open to all RIT faculty and teaching staff (full-time and part-time, visiting, lecturer, academic support specialist, tenured, tenure-track, adjunct, etc.).
