Intended audience:  This workshop is for all full-time faculty who want to submit a strong package for promotion OR are planning to do so in the near future.

How to best prepare materials for external reviewers and identify potential reviewers?  Get a copy of a colleague’s promotion package (or a portion, such as their research statement). We will not share these with each other. We can discuss what we learned from reviewing someone else’s statement:

  • How well did they sell their work?
  • Were there interesting strategies/formatting used?
  • Were there things you thought could have been done better?)

Contact at least one potential external reviewer (some of you have already had to complete this!). We will share strategies for selecting the reviewers and our experience with the process. Did they say yes? What does the university policy say regarding external letters?  Bring with you information from your college policy.

Pre-session Homework:  Identify what you want external reviewers to write about – are there specific areas that would be best addressed by different people?  Bring an exemplar promotion package from a colleague who was recently promoted.  Also, bring the university policy AND *your* college policy on promotion to professor.

-Light Refreshments will be provided.

-Interpreters provided upon request and subject to availability. Please make your request today at

-Registration preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.

This session is the third of three workshops that will be offered as part of the P3 Group program.  Any interested faculty member can attend any of the three workshops, participation in a P3 Group is not required.  AdvanceRIT, Council for the Representation & Engagement of Women Faculty (CREW), and Faculty Career Development facilitate the formation of peer support groups for faculty submitting their packages for promotion to full Professor and Senior or Principal Lecturer. These teams are referred to as Promotion Package Prep or “P3” (P cubed) groups.

 What is a P3 Group?

This effort began in 2016 when a group consisting of seven women faculty from five different colleges began meeting together and working towards assembling effective promotion materials.  Out of this group, six faculty submitted their proposal packages and all were promoted to full Professor.  Based on the positive feedback from participants from the first year, we broadened the effort and now coordinate the formation of P3 Groups for ALL interested tenured faculty seeking promotion to full Professor and for Lecturers seeking promotion to Senior or Principal Lecturer.   Visit the Promotion Package Prep P3 website for more details on this program.
