Instructional designer Michael Starenko will lead this active learning-style workshop to discuss the multiple purposes and elements of a course syllabus and explore how to (re)design a syllabus that facilitates both effective teaching and student learning. Some of the questions addressed in the workshop include:

  • What RIT policies are required or expected to be in every syllabus?
  • What course-specific policies ought to be included in my syllabus and how should I frame them?
  • What message is my syllabus sending to students?
  • How can my syllabus inform, guide, and motivate students when they’re not in class?
  • What resources and services are available for planning, writing, and formatting my syllabus?
FEEDBACK FROM THE FALL 2017 WORKSHOP: 
  • I'm always working to make my syllabus better. This gave me some idea of how to do that for the next semester's classes.
  • I had gone into the workshop having a syllabus nearly completed for the course I am teaching in the spring. After attending, I can say that I will definitely be adjusting it significantly.  Appreciated learning what to include, what does not need to be included or what could simply have a link, etc, length expectations, and general info ALL GREAT.  What I didn't expect was to learn about all of the more subtle nuances that can really change how a student might respond to this document.  That was great "icing on the cake."
  • It was helpful to hear other faculty have similar issues across the disciplines with their syllabus design. The small group activity was great. 
  • Love the social events and networking opportunities. It is great to meet other faculty and share ideas.
