This faculty-led workshop provides time, space, and structure for attendees to collaborate with peers and gain valuable feedback to help improve their assignments. The workshop will guide participants through the basic principles of transparent assignment design, developed as a part of a national initiative (Transparency in Learning and Teaching project, TILT Higher Ed) to promote equity and foster student success. Faculty will have the opportunity to improve their assignments by explicitly addressing not only the main task, but also the how and the why of assignments. The workshop will focus on adding clarity to assignments by including three simple key components:
  • The Task: what are you asking students to do
  • The Purpose: Why are you asking students to do this work?
  • The Criteria: How will their work be evaluated?

Why Attend?

Do your students ever get confused about what you’re asking them to do in an assignment? What about why, in the first place, you are asking them to do this work or how their work will be graded? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, please consider joining us on May 19, 2020.Workshop participants can expect to:
  • Improve the connection between course assignments with learning objectives
  • Provide students with explicit reasons for completing an assignment
  • Give and get feedback from colleagues on an existing assignment
  • Leave with an assignment that is transparently designed
