Our presenter for this session of Teachers on Teaching is Marcos Esterman, Associate Professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. He teaches in the Multi-Disciplinary Design, the Manufacturing and Management Leadership, and the Masters in Product Development programs. Dr. Esterman reports to the Provost on faculty retention issues for underrepresented populations. Prior to joining the RIT faculty, he held a variety of positions in manufacturing and R&D while concurrently conducting his PhD research at Stanford University.

Flipped classrooms, collaborative- and problem-based learning, active learning, student response systems, online and blended learning, inclusive and social-impact teaching and learning…you get the picture. There are many teaching strategies and pedagogies to choose from, but how does one navigate them? I will come clean up-front and state that I cannot answer this in any formulaic way. However, I can share my own personal journey on how I have tried out, rejected, and/or adapted many of them to create learning environments that benefited my students. In particular, I teach a team- and project-based course that is focused on the systematic process to define an engineering product that adds value to the world. The main focus is on reducing ambiguity and uncertainty in product definition, which has proven an ideal setting in which to experiment with and evaluate the impact of pedagogical choices.
